Cooperation with organizations and international projects

The commitment to society is a constant in all activities of the Corporació. It is committed to the content with a balanced and rigorous treatment of information and a special attention to pluralism and diversity, but beyond the screen and the antenna as well.

Public service and the relationship with the territory and citizens extend to all aspects of how the CCMA operates. It is this desire that keeps close ties with associations, organizations and institutions. It is actively involved in civic, social, sport, academia and research, especially in the promotion of culture. It also supports all kinds of cultural events like film, music, theatre or dance festivals.

The role of the Corporació in the audiovisual industry is especially important. A motor of the sector in Catalonia, the CCMA has been the basis on which a solid and competitive business has been formed. The agreements with production companies have provided funding and distribution windows for hundreds of creations and have been essential in creating a powerful audiovisual sector that is now internationalised.

The levels of collaboration established with institutions, organizations and associations are diverse: sponsorships, patronages, partnerships or regular participation in specific projects, among others.

Participation in technological research and innovation projects

CCMA's mission clearly states the will to lead in quality and innovation. To answer this mandate, the Corporation has participated in many research projects, both national and European, solidifying a network of collaborating partners across the continent. Drawing on this tradition, CCMA supports participation in technological research projects in the fields of audiovisual production, communications, content distribution and improving accessibility in audiovisual products.

Currently, the CCMA is participating in the European project MOSAIC, aimed at creating a prototype platform that will provide media professionals across Europe with innovative tools based on artificial intelligence for content creation. At the same time, it is also collaborating on the REMISS project, funded by the Strategic Lines Projects subprogram, which belongs to the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

MOSAIC

The MOSAIC project aims to address the challenge of linguistic diversity in Europe by developing innovative tools for multilingual translation, automatic subtitling, and content adaptation based on artificial intelligence (AI). These tools include creating translations for minority languages such as Catalan, Dutch, and Slovenian.

The project seeks to empower broadcasters and content producers to make their content accessible to a broader audience, enhancing cultural exchange and fostering cohesion across Europe. To achieve this, a centralized platform is being developed to facilitate the management and distribution of European multimedia content. Additionally, the project promotes the reuse of archival content through advanced tools for intelligent search and content adaptation for new platforms.

The project focuses on three key areas:

 - Multilingual content access: Development of tools to provide automatic translations, subtitling, and dubbing in multiple languages, including minority languages, using advanced AI technologies.

 - Content discovery: Implementation of AI tools to improve search and navigation, enabling users to locate relevant content within a vast and distributed archive.

 - Content personalization and reuse: Development of tools for transforming and repurposing archival content to meet the contemporary needs of new platforms and formats.

The project involves 10 European partners, including five broadcasters: the Catalan Broadcasting Corporation (CCMA), Germany’s DW TV, Slovenia’s RTV SLO, Belgium’s VRT, and Italy’s SKY ITALIA. Also participating are the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and various technology companies such as the Spanish firms PANGEANIC and CARSA, the Greek company INFALIA, and the Italian firm FINCONS, which also coordinates the project.

The diversity of the project’s broadcasters, both public and private, allows it to meet the needs and requirements of various actors and nationalities. This includes incorporating diverse types of content and languages, with special attention to minority languages like Catalan, Slovenian, and Flemish, thereby ensuring greater linguistic inclusion in Europe.

REMISS

The aim of the REMISS project is to develop a methodology to reduce disinformation spread about vulnerable and stigmatized groups.

The generation and spread of disinformation form part of a widespread phenomenon that affects the sharing and diffusion of content via social networks. The problems generated by this phenomenon are well known, from the rise of widespread mistrust in society to the sharpening of the mechanisms of social polarisation or stigmatisation of vulnerable groups. This situation has surpassed the purely professional sphere of both researchers and journalists, and the threat posed by the generation and spread of false content and news is a phenomenon already internalised by the vast majority of society. The goal of the project is to comprehend and reduce the generation and dissemination of fake news, a key step toward developing well-founded policies and actions to detect this fake news and reduce its spread.

Project members: Eurecat, Esade, University of Valencia, Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals, Computer Vision Centre, Verificat.

Project funded through the 2021 Call for R&D+i Projects in Strategic Lines of the Spanish State Research Agency (Ministry of Science and Innovation) and the European Union's Next Generation/EFRD funds.

The CCMA is part of the international consortium that has won the public tender convened by the EU to promote changing from analogue television to digital television in Colombia. It collaborates with the Catalan company BAa Consultors i Persidera SpA, with the support of the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation.

A delegation of professionals from the CCMA is responsible for the training in key aspects for migrating to DTT in training sessions that take place in Colombia and Catalonia in different phases, throughout 2017 and 2018.

Implementation of DTT for public television in Colombia

CCMA participates in the EU project to promote DTT on public television in Colombia

A delegation of professionals from the CCMA has travelled to Colombia who will be in charge of training in key aspects for migrating to DTT. The Corporation, in a project led by the Department of Corporate Strategy and Human Resources, is part of the international consortium that has won the public tender convened by the EU to promote changing from analogue television to digital television in Colombia.

In December 2016, the European Union awarded to the consortium led by the Catalan company BAa Consultors, Persidera SpA (Italy) and the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals - 3Cat (CCMA) in collaboration with the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation, the contract to "contribute to the migration of analogue television to digital terrestrial television in Colombia, using the DVB-T2 standard, ensuring taking advantage of comparative advantages offered by this technology, providing quality television and promoting the use of the public network as an instrument that generates new opportunities to promote social and territorial cohesion, innovation and the economic development of the country." The consortium project incorporated by CCMA competed with other operators and companies in the Spanish and European audiovisual sector.

The contract for implementing the project ends in May of 2018 and during this period a Colombian delegation comprised of professionals from the Ràdio Televisió Nacional de Colòmbia-RTVC and Canals Públics Regionals, the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications, The National Television Authority, the National Spectrum Agency and the Communications Regulation Commission-CRC have visited TV3 to develop the second phase of the training. On behalf of CCMA, thirty professionals from the different stages took part in the project as a whole.

DTT, an economic boost in Colombia

The general objective of this initiative is to strengthen the Colombian television sector through the transfer of knowledge and technology within the framework of the migration process towards digital terrestrial television, in order to promote innovation and economic development in the country. With this objective, the project mainly supports Colombian public entities related, both at national and regional level, to providing Colombia with the tools, technical, regulatory and for developing knowledge on quality content that will lead to DTT being turned on and turning off analogue television without trauma and making the best use of the advantages of the standard Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T2) in the implementation of digital television in Colombia.

All the parties involved agreed that the experience was very enriching and positive.
