The 2021 scoreboard of La Marató reached 12,147,989 euros, which will be used to raise awareness and promote research in mental health
La Marató of TV3 and Catalunya Radio 2021 has added more than 3 million euros to the provisional scoreboard of the charity telethon, reaching a final figure of 12,147,989 euros which will be spent on raising the level of public awareness publicity and research in mental health.
On 19 December 2021, the day of the 30th edition of La Marató, at around 2 o'clock in the morning, the scoreboard stood at 9,022,147 euros after 7 hours of radio and almost 15 of television to break down taboos surrounding mental health. After the programme finished the scoreboard remained open and donations were made up to the end of March. This money is what has been added to reach the final total of 12 million euros for this edition and in all the 30-year history of La Marató the total raised has been 228,002,353 euros.
The announcement of these figures came at the end of a journey filled with emotions from the start of this charity project when La Marató climbed aboard Eloi Vila's car in his TV programme "Al cotxe!" to drive round Catalonia. During the trip of "La Marató puja 'Al cotxe'. La xifra final", La Marató spoke to a wide range of people who took part in this charity project that has, over the years, become a great social event and one of the driving forces of biomedical research in Catalonia, and of publicity and awareness-raising in the field of health. Presenters of the programme, witnesses who have given testimony of their illness, volunteers, doctors, researchers and musical groups have shared their experiences of being with La Marató, accompanied by archive images of the most emotional, most spectacular and most significant moments of the show.
La Marató 2021 raises money for mental health
The funds raised in La Marató 2021 will be used to raise awareness and promote research in mental health.
In February, the Fundació La Marató de TV3 opened a call in which 150 projects were presented to apply for funding. Currently, the candidate projects are being evaluated in a rigorous process co-ordinated by the Catalan Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Research (AQuAS) of the Catalan Department of Health. This review will make it possible to decide how to distribute the donations from thousands of people who took part in the last edition of this charity project. The result of the evaluation will be made public by the board of the Foundation, acting on the proposal of the Scientific Advisory Committer, in November of this year.
The projects funded by the Fundació La Marató de TV3 will be run by teams in public research centres and not-for-profit entities over three years. During this time, the general public will be able to know what effect the research that is fostered by their generosity and support is having on the quality and expectancy of life of people who lived with as mental health problem.
Cardiovascular health in La Marató 2022
After closing the 2021 scoreboard, La Marató has now opened a new one for 2022, which will deal with cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of death in developed countries and one of the most important current problems facing public health. Raising awareness and publicising cardiovascular health, along with boosting scientific research, will be the goals of the 31st edition of La Marató de TV3 and Catalunya Radio, which will run its campaign during this year culminating in the programme on 18 December. You can make your donations now.
Catalonia has a sound network of research groups in cardiovascular diseases and with the funds that are raised they will be able to achieve breakthroughs in the prevention, treatment and prognosis of these diseases with the goal of increasing the expectation and quality of life of people who are affected.
