A number of new nations are just waiting to be born. What about Catalonia?
The spread of democracy and globalization is making many of the world's politically under-represented peoples yearn for a nation state of their own. Many of these peoples can lay strong historic and cultural claims to nationhood. Now they are tiring of centralized governments running roughshod over their languages, customs and institutions. In several would-be nations, central government thwarts these peoples' opportunities for economic development and hampers dialogue with international organizations. Wouldn't it just be easier to cut the ties that bind and choose independence? This program looks at the prospects for new nations springing up in North America and Europe in the years to come.
Farewell, Spain? compares the situation in Greenland (Denmark), Scotland (Great Britain) and Quebec (Canada) with that of Catalonia (Spain). It asks whether secession is a democratic right and, if so, whether it is a legal or a political issue. The program also asks whether democratically-governed nations are obliged to negotiate secession when that is what most people want.
After exploring the political background and possible paths to independence, the documentary analyzes the economic resources of each country and its viability as a sovereign state. It also looks at both the EU's official and unofficial stances to secession by part of a member state.
