"She was christened with a name nobody remembered but they called her Laia."
Based on a novel written by Salvador Espriu, Laia is a classic Catalan literature work of the early 20th Century. A story dealing with deception, love and heartbreaks within a context of adversity which leads its characters to extreme situations.
A bittersweet tale but also very humane.
Laia is a girl who lives in Sinera, an imaginary fishing village of the Catalan coast. The society around her is closed, religious and male chauvinistic. Women's roles are relegated to submission but Laia is different and she'll pay a high price for it.
Following a miserably unhappy childhood and a bleak marriage, Laia barely manages to survive her relationship with two men while being confronted with the hatred of her village and dreaming about the freedom that only the sea can grant her. But the sea won't oblige and she will end up falling into a dark hole despite her attempts to survive.
Directed by Lluís Danés, Laia is surrounded by a magic atmosphere which explains this delicate yet tragic story of love and unlove. A visual show supported by a magnificent scenography created by Sylvia Steinbrecht.
