A History of the Catalonia's Resistance to the Bourbon Armies in 1713 and 1714
Struggle, Resistance and Courage in Catalonia, 1714.
"The Case of the Catalans" is based on a massive work on the War of the Spanish Succession titled "Historical Narratives" written by a survivor of the siege, Francesc de Castellví, and supplemented with texts from anonymous diaries and official acts from the period. The documentary explores the history of, and motivation behind, a generation of Catalans sacrificing their lives to defend their laws and freedom, all taking place within the context of the Spanish Succession War that rocked the whole of Europe.
Through the voice of a narrator, and with the addition of fictional and recreated footage, the documentary unfolds around two story lines. The first is a psychological portrait of the two monarchs, Philip V and Charles III, competing for the Spanish crown. The other focuses on the figures of Antonio de Villarroel, Supreme Commander of the Catalan forces, and Rafael Casanova, Chief Minister of Barcelona, and their roles in the siege of Barcelona and its final surrender on September 11, 1714.
Two renowned historians Agustí Alcoberro, Director of the Museum of Catalan History, and Carles Martínez Shaw, Professor of Modern History at the Universities of Santander, Barcelona and Madrid¿add their voices to the documentary and offer their interpretations of the events that took place.
"The Case of the Catalans" is more than a historical documentary. It is a portrait of how the will to stand up for one's freedom can move an entire population to action, to its limits and beyond.
