Based on a classic Catalan play by J.Mº de Sagarra
Life unfolds monotonously in the café of a small Catalan fishing village in the early 1900s. The café owner's youngest daughter, Rosa, is soon to be married which livens things up in the little parish until the elder daughter, Caterina suddenly clouds the picture with her own personal drama; she's become pregnant out of wedlock to a no-good man who has abandoned her. The strict moral climate of the time gets the "well-intentioned" villagers' tongues wagging and her father forces her to abort the child.
But, unbenownst to others, a love story is quietly developing in the background, to the point where it can no longer remain hidden. Claudi, a shy, solitary, and hard-drinking fisherman is secretly in love with Caterina. Little is likely to come out of that, however, because of the villagers' prejudices and the fact that an older wealthy genetleman from Banyuls¿who is unaware of Caterina's story¿has chosen her to be his wife. She has no interest in the man but has no say in the matter, and it's only when the local gossip about her past affair reaches him that he cancels the engagement.
This last blow leaves Caterina's father fearing for the future and reputation of both his daughter and his café. Fortunately, Claudi, inspired by Caterina's strength, overcomes his fears and publicly declares his love for her.
Claudi and Caterina, apparently condemned to live in disgrace, find the determination to stand up to the moral judgments of the villagers and stand firmly by their love for each other.
